The public space is increasingly dominated by regulations, security and commercialism. This threatens the freedom, independence and creativity of citizens worldwide. How can we reclaim the streets as a place where everybody can simply have fun – without corporate sponsors, meddling authorities or lengthy permit procedures?
World Pillow Fight Day is annually held in 100+ cities around the globe. The concept is simple: Invite your friends to bring pillows to a public square, enjoy the friendliest fight you’ve ever attended and join the fluffy clean-up afterwards. And you can bring your family, because the kids love it too!
In 2009 we set up the first edition in Amsterdam. We chose the War Memorial on Dam Square as the most appropriate location. It’s the place where the Dutch honor the heroes that fight for their freedom. And it’s a place where we would never get a permit if we applied for one, proving that citizens can fight for their freedom as long as it’s done with pillows.
It’s celebrating its 6 year anniversary this year… But at times we had to defend for our beloved event. Like the time we had to convince the police that this friendly fight belongs on our national beacon of freedom. And like the time we had to convince the chocolate milk brand Chocomel not to claim this event as their corporate campaign. Chocomel moved its pillow fight indoors under another name, while the police has been nothing but helpful ever since…
